I’ve been trying to find the correct abbreviations for the days of the week. I think it goes like this: Mon., Tues., Wed., Thurs., Fri., Sat., Sun. But then one book says to shorten everything to three letters, so you have Tue. and Thu. Personally I like Thurs. better than Thu. – Thu. just looks a little sad and incomplete, it at least needs an “r.”

There, you’ve now witnessed the inner workings of the mind of an English Major.

Dear People-Who-Use-”Gorge!”-as-a-shortened-form-of-”Gorgeous!,”

I have seen you call things “gorge!” all over Pinterest. It is starting to drive me crazy.

What you are actually saying is: stuff your face with food until you keel over from overeating! There are other meanings too, like: large ravine, the crop of a hawk, the contents of the stomach, and the narrow entrance to the outwork of a fortificaiton. None of these meanings make any sense when you are describing a pair of Louboutin pumps, or, your friends for that matter.

Sincerely,

Me

Yesterday I went to the Arlington County Library Book Sale (details here) which was amazing. I made out like a bandit. My most prized find being a complete Oxford English Dictionary (OED). Yes, a dictionary. I am a complete nerd when it comes to the English language.

Why the OED? Well, in the first place its so big I can’t actually lift it by myself. I had to get a cart for it, that is how thorough it is. Secondly, it gives you the history of the word and all the different ways it has been used throughout the years. This is fantastic if you are reading something written in a different era — what their words mean might not be what our words mean. Finally, its an actual book. I don’t mind online dictionaries, they are useful. But there is something to be said for a huge, two volume, type-so-small-you-need-a-magnifying-glass, English dictionary.

A friend shared this on Facebook, isn’t it amazing! It give me goosebumps! I love the Arabic language, its very earthy and human sounding. Then add rich voices and it takes you out of this world!

I think one of the things I love about the video aspect of this clip is watching the lips of the people in the crowd, some of them are singing along!
