Check out the cool picture I took! Can you tell which way is up?
My roommates and I went to Roosevelt Island for a birthday picnic (two of my roommates have their birthday on the same day!), and I took this while leaning over backwards. So the “sky” is actually the water of the reflecting pool. You can see two pink rose petals floating in the water in the upper right corner. In retrospect I guess I didn’t have to hang upside down to take this, but its more fun that way!
Sorry for the lack of posting! The past two weeks have been so crazy – crazy fun that it is! Two weddings, baseball games, parties, ballet classes, horseback riding, visiting with friends and family, rooftop bars, beautiful weather, football games, hat wearing, choir concerts and so on and so forth. Not to mention the normal mundane stuff like, laundry and paying bills. But this week is leveling out a bit, so hopefully I will be more consistent! Toodles!

I am getting ready to throw a shower for a dear friend of mine. Here are the invites that went out a few weeks ago, aren’t they sweet! I commissioned Jill of Dolce Domum , she owns the Etsy shop Georgie Pie, to paint a little tent on a cream coloured card, she added the heart shaped smoke and the clouds in the background. Or are they mountains? Sometimes they look like mountains to me, sometimes they look like clouds.
Why a tent? Because the bride registered at REI for camping equipment, I couldn’t resist!
Be sure to check out Jill’s Etsy shop! She is so talented.
I have never had caviar. I’ve always wanted to try it, and now I might have a chance! My roommates and I are planning a soiree on Saturday, and we decided that if we were substantially under budget, we could buy some caviar to serve. This is going to be fun.
So I started my research with a trip to Balducci’s in Old Town Alexandria to see what they had to say. Carlos, the guy behind the counter, explained all the different types and how to serve caviar. It was a lot of fun! Did you know caviar is eaten off of mother-of-pearl spoons so that the metal taste from normal spoons doesn’t interfere with the taste of the caviar? Caviar spoons look like this:

Aren’t they pretty! I think I would buy caviar just to have an excuse to buy the spoons. You would use these spoons to eat the caviar straight from the jar, chilled of course. It was at this point I remember that humans are weird. We eat chilled fish eggs from a jar with a fancy spoon and call it a delicacy?
Back to the caviar though. There is imported and domestic. Black caviar comes from sturgeon. The red kind from salmon. Since I can’t afford the $120 per oz. kind, Carlos suggested that I serve a lesser grade domestic caviar (at an affordable $55 per oz.) with Creme Fraiche to make it last longer and serve it on crackers. Sadly, mother-of-pearl spoons would not be involved. Mixed with Creme Fraiche it would look like this:

Finally there is the salmon caviar at $9 per oz, I am not sure I like the looks of it, it looks like the power bait my dad used to fish with. Carlos said this is usually just used as a garnish. And when he said that this scene flitted through my mind:
I am off to a bridal shower in a little bit! I love these parties, in fact, any party that involves chatter and fun conversation is brilliant in my book!
I tend to steer clear of the normal gifts though, I like to bring something that is more personal than a salad bowl. Some ideas? Flowers are always a great idea! A lovely bouquet will be appreciated by any bride to be. If something pretty and blue is to be had it can make a good present too! A small blue pin, hairpin, purse, shoe clip. Or something lovely for the new home! A beautiful vase or picture is always appreciated. Better yet! If you have already received your invite to the wedding, have it framed and give it to the bride! Save the electric mixer gift for the actual wedding and bring something more personal to the shower!

If I were a bride, I would be ecstatic to receive a pair of these earring at my shower. Lilyja has many more beautiful items that could work too!
