Tomorrow is the 4th of July, the birthday of our nation. I was thinking about freedom, and how we associate the 4th with freedom. But I think maybe we are a little confused.  Each person, insofar as he is a human being, is perfectly free. He can choose to do whatever he wants to do, he has a free will. No one can tell him what to do, he his is not bound by anyone.

However, the ability to exercise that free will without fear of being punished is liberty.  We don’t need freedom, we need liberty.  We all have the freedom in the world. What we need is the liberty to do what we want without fearing we will be incarcerated or punished.

This of course leads to another arguement, should everyone be allowed to do anything they want, even to their own detriment. But I don’t want to address that here and now.

Our own pledge of allegence says “with liberty and justice for all.” We are free, what we want to preserve is our liberty.
